History of Tennessee Lodge 204

Tennessee Lodge 204 traces its origins to Freemason traditions dating back to medieval Europe. In 1850, Quincy Adams Tipton, Sr.—a descendant of President John Quincy Adams—petitioned for a Masonic lodge in Morganton, Tennessee, but moved the application to Loudon, where the lodge was chartered on October 7, 1851.

The lodge initially met in various locations, acquiring its own building on Loudon's waterfront in 1861, which burned down three years later. Afterward, the lodge shared a property with the Methodist Church on Lot #106, later converting it into Loudon's first public school before reacquiring it in 1879. This building served multiple community purposes until its sale in 1981.

Today, Tennessee Lodge 204 is located at 601 Maremont Boulevard and regularly hosts meetings and community events. Over its 160-year history, the lodge has persevered through wars, disasters, and social change, counting 123 Worshipful Masters—including several with multiple terms. Its legacy continues to shape the Loudon community.
